Emergency Supply Kit Week 4
We’re focusing on building our Emergency Supply Kits on budgeting using the 24-week preparedness calendar (pdf).
Instead of starting at the top of the list and following this calendar week-by-week, we’re:
- Highlighting some of this week’s best deals for items on the 24-week preparedness calendar (pdf), especially canned goods and water.
- Each week we’re adding a few items that are on sale at our favorite stores to our shopping list so we’ll soon have many of the items we need for our kits. When we purchase the items as they go on sale, we cross them off the 24-week preparedness calendar.
- Going through our current stock pile and crossing off the emergency supplies on the list that we currently have. Then we set those items aside for the kit.
The key point here is having a timeline – making progress on a regular basis. Otherwise, it’s just willy nilly and you could find yourself never getting to it. So we’re hoping these posts will help us keep this on our list as a priority.

This is what Anne picked up this week at Target for her family’s kit.

(1) Market Pantry Water, 24 pk – $2.50

Final price = $2.37
Each 24 pack of .5L bottles is approximately 3 gallons of water, so this is enough water for 1 day for Anne’s family of three. Remember, you need 1 gallon of water per person/pet per day for drinking and washing/hygiene.
Anne gathered these essentials from her stockpile:
- 1 roll paper towels
- 2 cans chicken
- 1 can soup
- 1 10-pack apple juice boxes
Anne is writing the expiration dates in Sharpie on the front of the packages or containers so it is easier to read when she rotates the food a few times a year.
Anne added a few more quarters to her stash of cash. In a major emergency, if power is out, ATMs and debit and credit cards could be out of service. It is a good item to have some coins and bills in small denominations.
Have you been building your emergency kit?

The Ambient weather radio is listed at that price all the time. It isn’t a special deal. I sell them on my disaster preparedness site. I think it is important to be clear about prices.

I like the calendar but a couple things missing that I have needed in the past include back up phone batteries and chargers and battery operated fans. Would love to have deals on those highlighted if possible 🙂

QFC and Rite Aid both have Band aids for 2/$5, they also have first aid kit bags out that are free if you buy three Band aid/ Neosporin/JJ brand items. These bags contain $15 in coupons including a 3/$5 for Band aids. This could be a rolling deal if you use four of these coupons and pick up four first aid bags.
Anne says
Thanks for letting us know there are kits available at QFC. Are they the same as I saw at Rite Aid, too? http://queenbeetoday.com/build-an-emergency-supply-kit-week-1-the-best-deals/
If so, you might want to double check there are coupons before you purchase. When I bought my 2nd kit, I forgot to check, and mine had been stolen 🙁
