We started here, getting Lowe’s gift cards from the Albertsons promotion.
We borrowed a truck from Grandpa today, so we could pick up four sheets of OSB from Lowe’s today. OSB are basically big boards, that’s all I know about them. Apparently we need them for the coop. We My husband is in the process of clearing an area of our yard that is currently covered in rocks, for our chicken coop home (um, he seriously rocks, because this is lousy work, especially in the rain.) We want it cleared out so we can easily dig and bury parts of the coop to keep predators out.
We plan on starting construction next Wednesday afternoon and finishing by Friday. Can we do it? We will see.
I was researching chicken varieties online tonight and chatting with Mavis (my friend, the chicken expert) about chicken sources, while simultaneously making dinner. Let’s just say I probably shouldn’t multi-task. Especially where chickens or dinner are involved. My oh my. So much for my manager markdown basil/mozzarella “pizzas” – we did manage to save one pan, thanks to my husband who walks into the kitchen and says “uh, you’re bread is burning”. . .
Stay tune for the chicken coop tour (coming Monday, you can still send in pictures!) and I’ll be reporting on the chicken coop building progress next week!
I’m going on the Tacoma Urban Chicken Coop Tour tomorrow – will I see you there? If not, don’t worry, I’ll take photos and report back.
Do you have suggestions for where I can find friendly, disease-free, not-too-old, laying chickens? Oh, by next Friday?

You can order 4 month old pullets from McMurrays. That’s what I did and they were fantastic birds.
If you buy off Craigslist, be sure to do what you can to determine the hens’ ages. You don’t want a hen at the end of her career who is being passed off as younger.

Check Craigslist, you might find some hens there

For any ag related question, it is always good to check with your local university extention office, may also be known as the 4-H office. There should be one in every county of every state with a land grant university, in your case, WSU. Call the office and they may know of someone locally who has chickens for sale. Next option, craigs list.

I know that Lattins Cider Mill will sell their chickens sometimes. Do you know where I am talking about? They do have older chicks that are past the “raise ’em in the garage” stage but are not laying yet. They will probably start to lay around September. It’s worth a try to go out and get some. If all else fails you can get a fresh apple fritter and some .89 cent apples! If that doesn’t work out let me know. I do know of a few other options.

That’s good to know Amanda! I am very familiar with Lattins. And can’t beat the fresh apple fritter and $0.89/lb apples!

Um – of course! I’m counting on it. But I wanted to get more than two. So that’s why I’m asking around. 🙂
