Good morning!
It’s Tuesday – so the grocery ads should be out later today – hopefully we’ll get them in the mail today. We don’t have an early edition of the Albertsons ad, so it won’t be early again this week. We hope to get them all up by the end of the day!
Halloween is 30 days away – Do you give away the same candy every year or just whatever you can find on sale? By watching for sales early you can save a lot of money on the candy you give out (instead of paying full price the day before) – but then if you have candy in your house, do you risk eating it beforehand? I’d love your ideas for creative things to hand out besides candy and I’d love to hear how you save and/or plan for Halloween.
Every Wednesday through Halloween we are will be posting a round-up of the best Halloween candy prices. So if you have a harvest festival, Halloween party or just need to stock up the office candy stash – it will be your place to go for sweet candy prices.

FOR THE LOCAL NW FOLKS
Olympia – Did you know that TJ Maxx opened in West Olympia on Sunday? It’s in the old Borders building, near Eddie Bauer and Bed Bath & Beyond. I stopped in today and it was PACKED with people. I looked around but did not find any deals for me – a pair of jeans was $49.99, a cute ballerina outfit for my daughter to wear to dance class was $17, tops $25. It just didn’t really seem that great to me, but maybe it’s because they are better brands than Ross? I’d love your thoughts on TJ Maxx – what are the best things to buy there? Did you find any good deals this weekend?

I have given out a variety every year. I have a large tray that I use and put an assortment on it. The mix changes every year depending on what I have. There is usually packs of gum, full size bars, boxes of crayons, activity books, small toys, etc. A lot of the smaller kids go for the crayons/books/toys and the teens/tweens go for the gum. Every year I hear from LOTS of kids that ours is the coolest. They get a choice, and they really seem to like it. My mix is eclectic, but I do really try to put out things that kids would WANT. I have even put things like hair bands in the mix (back when we got tons free from Walgreens with RR). I ALWAYS put candy because there will always be kids who want that, but you might be surprised how many will take something else. (Especially the really young and the teens)
And for numbers… I get over 100 every year. We are a popular neighborhood. One year I had only regular Halloween candy, and there were actually several kids who asked why I didn’t have gum or other stuff.

Those are good ideas-gum, hair bands, etc.-because I too loaded up (and I’ve been using the same ponytail for months because it never breaks!). Haha I’m sure having such a variety is fun for kids.

I do give out things besides candy. I like to stock up on books (for the kids’ cousins) when Target & Michael’s Halloween clearance goes 75% or 90% off. I also like to pick up small non-candy treats like bouncy balls, stickers, & even sometimes small craft kits (last year I found halloween themed necklace packets at Michael’s for $0.05 each). We also give out candy, but we don’t get many trick or treaters so we always just buy something we like.
