Rise and Shine is my way of sitting down and having a cup of coffee with you! We talk about the new deals of the day, highlights from yesterday, and anything else that might help us save time, money or energy.
Good morning! How was your weekend? Ours was good. We did NOT end up painting our bedroom – we my husband did some taping and it’s a little bit closer to it happening. Maybe this week. Instead we did chores around the house and ran some errands. I even snuck in an afternoon nap – which NEVER happens. So I’m calling the weekend a success even if we didn’t accomplish much on “the list.” Because, I can put nap and watch Frozen for the 20 millionth time on the list, right?023
My goal for this week is to get some seeds into dirt, under lights, in my garage. I think I’m a bit behind – I always seem to be when it comes to my garden. I ordered my seeds last month and they are just screaming to be planted. Erika over at Edible NW Life came up with lists of suggested seeds for growing in the Northwest – all at various price points – and I found it super helpful. I also need to order some new dirt and get things cleaned up in the backyard. And the 5-day forecast is RAIN everyday, so that’s cool. I have a ridiculous amount of pumpkin varieties to plant and I’m trying some new stuff this year, too. Exciting!!
By the way – I’ve never planted seeds and put them under lights before. Never. I have lots to learn. Google will be my friend this week, I think. If you have any tips about growing seedlings under lights – please comment! Where do you get your lights? What kind of lights should I get? What sort of soil should I use? Yeah, pretty much any tips or suggestions you have will be welcomed!
And speaking of being all self-sufficient and growing/harvesting stuff, don’t miss this deal over on Amazon for canning jars!
And. . . Amazon JUST dropped the price on these Ball Regular Mouth Half Pint Jars with Lids and Bands, Set of 12 to $8.09! This is the BEST price they’ve been on Amazon and it’s a phenomenal price. It does say that it may take 4-6 weeks to ship, but that should be perfect if you do summer canning (and often I find it ships sooner!)
This ENDS tonight! I’m giving away a $200 Amazon gift card to a lucky reader! I’m so grateful for all of you the giveaway is a little THANK you for being part of this community!

Deborah Durkee says
Start your cool weather crops first, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, greens and lettuce mixes. Tomatoes, peppers and eggplant if you want them bigger at time of planting, but you will have to start them in little 6 packs to have enough room under the lights. In 6-7 weeks they will need “up potted” to bigger pots.
Too early for cucumbers, squash and pumpkins. They are heat loving and will just get leggy and mildew if left too long in pots. Also they don’t transplant well after they get bigger.

I have been starting seeds under lights for two years now. It makes such a difference! I get all my info and inspiration from Mavis at onehundreddollarsamonth.com
She JUST did a post about starting seeds under lights AND she lives in Western WA so her info is good for us folks here in the NW.
