Saturday in the garden – Harvesting carrots, tomatoes, leeks (pumpkins so close!)

This week we had a fun harvest in the garden. My tomatoes are starting to turn red! It must be because I finally broke down and bought some at the grocery store this week. 🙂 But I was able to pluck a few cups of ripe tomatoes from the vine this morning. We also harvested a few leeks, more zucchini and cucumbers! We are having a grilled chicken salad tonight with tomatoes, carrots, cucumbers and lettuce from our garden!

I finally pulled up all my carrots and they are beautiful! I was getting anxious to yank them out of the ground, so I finally did. We planted purple carrots and regular carrots – they both taste as amazing as they look

I think this next week I’ll harvest some of these peppers and we’ll do chicken fajitas!

I want to pick my pumpkins so bad – I am thinking we’ll pick them by the end of the week so the plant can start putting energy into the many smaller pumpkins farther down the vine.

I’m hoping more of my tomatoes will ripen this week. They look like they are thinking about it, so this is a good sign!

I still haven’t planted my fall vegetables. I’m wondering if I will just pass on it this fall. I started with NOTHING in April and now have six raised beds and five chickens. I think I might allow myself a break from fall gardening, without guilt and jump in head first come spring. We shall see, jury is still out on that one.

If you’re just now joining my gardening journey, I’m learning as I go grow and sharing along the way:

  • First I built the raised beds
  • Then I added dirt
  • Then I added plants
  • and for fun, we created a DIY Worm Compost Bin
  • and then Mavis came and gave me some advice – um, give your plants some room
  • Our first harvest, lettuce rejoice and be glad

The garden is part of our quest to be more self-sufficient this year. We also got chickens this spring! See our chicken journey here.

How’s your garden doing?

If you decide to pass on fall gardening, think about a low maint. cover crop that you can feed to the ladies in the spring!

What is a cover crop? I’m clueless on a lot of this gardening stuff, remember? Thanks for the suggestion!
