TODAY, Saturday, May 10, 2014 is the annual National Stamp Out Hunger food drive! If you’ve been couponing for awhile, you probably have a stockpile of things you can pull from to donate. Did you know nearly one in four American children are struggling with a lack of food? One in six Americans is facing hunger?
All you need to do is go through your non-perishable food supplies (like canned meats, fish, soup, juice and vegetables, and pasta, cereal and rice) and leave it at your mailbox THIS Saturday May 10, 2014. Make sure to check expiration dates and don’t donate anything in glass. Your mail carrier will pick up it up and deliver it to your local food bank or pantry!
And remember, you don’t have to wait for the National Stamp Out Hunger food drive to come around once a year. You can drop extra stockpile items off year round at your local food banks, homeless shelters or other non-profit social services agency.
And one final thought – when you are going through your pantry – consider donating a few of your FAVORITE things. I think too often when people donate to the food bank it’s the bottom of the barrel. Although I am sure the food bank would appreciate any donation – for me personally I always find it much more rewarding when it’s more of a sacrifice – and I know I’m giving something that I personally enjoy. High protein foods are always needed, things like peanut butter, canned beans, canned meats, etc.
Will you be leaving a donation to Stamp Out Hunger?

In Olympia, the YWCA runs a program called The Other Bank in which they give out toiletries & things like laundry detergent & dish soap. It’s a great program & they always need donations!

thanks for the reminder. i once read an article about what food banks like most and i think it was canned meats/protein source and peanut butter and formula. there are probably lists online somewhere.
does anyone know if you can also donate sundries like shampoo, toothpaste? in a separate bag of course. thanks

I live in Mukilteo, WA and our food bank does request toiletries/personal care products. I am not sure if Stamp Out Hunger is requesting those, though. I think they usually include a list with the bag they put in your mailbox,
