How to Become a Disney Travel Agent
Have you ever wondered if you can put your vast Disney knowledge to use to make money? Have you heard about Disney travel agents and thought, “How did they get that job?”
Well I’m here to help you find out if this is your dream job (and if it is, how to apply!)
Pro tip: There’s actually no such title as Disney Travel Agent – it’s commonly used by many, but no agent works FOR Disney, so all such agents are actually just specialized in Disney travel.
The vast majority of travel agents that plan Disney vacations are independent contractors, which allows them to:
- Work from home
- Work the hours they want to work
- Work with the clients they want to work with
- Create their own small business
It’s an excellent job for stay-at-home moms or dads, for example, who need some flexibility in their day but who have time they can set aside to work hard at creating the most perfect magical vacations.
What should you look for? The most important thing is to find a quality travel agency to align yourself with – so you can be as successful as possible in a positive, encouraging team environment. The Enchanted Traveler, my travel agency for example, has a full training program for new agents, resources, templates, social media photography, onsite training, a highly active agent Facebook group for questions and answers, and more. We are also a Gold Level Authorized Disney Vacation Planner, part Disney’s elite agency program. That means both agents and clients can be assured that the agency does a high level of quality sales.
How do you find an open Disney Travel Agent job? Agencies look to bring on new agents from time to time. (For example, we’re currently taking applications). Reach out to agencies that you feel align with your style and values. Ask about openings and what they are looking for in agents.
What skills do you need to be a Disney specialized travel agent? Every travel agency will have different priorities, but here at The Enchanted Traveler we look for:
- Self motivation – with no boss scheduling your day, it’s up to you to be productive!
- Customer service skills – you must be able to ask the right questions and listen well to your clients
- A high level of Disney knowledge – anyone can show up to a Disney park, but qualified candidates have the answers to many questions right at the tip of their tongue at all times
- Excellent with details – clients depend on you to keep track of every aspect of their vacation plans
- Organization – you’ll need to keep track of multiple trips at one time!
- A love of learning – Disney is constantly changing! You have to love to constantly update your education through training and onsite visits to keep up with it all. An entrepreneurial spirit – as an independent contractor, you are in charge of your growth. You set your goals, you put in the time to expand, and you’ll enjoy the growth of your clientele and bookings.
Disney travel planning isn’t for everyone – here are some signs this it’s probably not the right fit for you :
- If you’re looking for a side hobby that doesn’t take much time
- If you prefer to be told what to do with your work hours
- If you feel uncomfortable getting on the phone with customers or suppliers
- If you only want to do the planning but not the other work involved in booking travel
- If you want to “get rich quick” – this industry takes work to build up to consistent higher levels of income!
If any of these statements ring true for you then Disney travel planning may not be the best fit for you!
What’s it like to plan Disney vacations for a living? It’s a real job! That means it has its ups and downs. There are joyful moments when your clients send photos of the magical time they are having. There’s the thrill of writing up the perfect itinerary. There are times when you feel like the hold time with Disney will never end. There are fascinating moments when you learn a new skill that takes your business to the next level. There’s that time your client cancels the trip at the last minute and you feel like your work was wasted. There are the friendships you make and people you can’t wait to see at the next team trip.
Overwhelmingly, I know our team loves our jobs even with the bumps along the way. An agent in this line of work begins by learning what a client’s needs and wants are. The agent then works to find the perfect vacation fit for the client and books them. Next, the agent spends time on a planning call asking all the right questions to determine how to customize this client’s plans perfect. Later, an agent does everything from dining and activity reservations to a full travel guide with ride by ride customized plans to keep clients in shorter lines. And the agent is always available along the way to help or answer questions!
