We used to do EXTENSIVE grocery match-ups for every store across the nation. We don’t have that capacity any more. But groceries are such a substantial portion to saving each month that I want to go back to a weekly HIGH LEVEL post with the best, of the best, deals at our local stores. You can expect this post to publish weekly on Tuesday nights or Wednesday mornings when the new ads come out.
Primarily this post will be grocery deals at Fred Meyer/QFC, Safeway and Costco. If you have a Kroger, Albertsons/Safeway or Costco – these deals should pertain closely to you. They should at least give you an idea of what types of deals you should find at your local store. If I’m able to scout out a Trader Joe’s or local store – I’ll include that, too.
Basically this post sums up my favorite grocery deals – with my 2 cents in extra commentary.
I think I’ll be shopping at Fred Meyer this week – they have too many of my favorite deals!
FRED MEYER
After weeks of fairly sleepy pricing at Fred Meyer I was personally impressed at the deals they pushed out for the week of August 19 – August 25, 2020. These are my FAVORITE deals – you can find ALL the advertised deals at the Find Fred Meyer ad online here.
These will appear in no particular order, it’s how I’m flipping through the ad. 🙂
T-Bone Steaks – $4.99/lb (limit 2), stock up price
Freeze these if you like steaks, it’s a stock-up price (as noted above).
18 oz Simple Truth organic blueberries – $3.99
This price is a great price for freezing! Spread out on a cookie sheet and freeze to avoid them sticking together. Great for smoothies.
Pork shoulder, bone-in – $0.99/lb (limit 2)
Throw these suckers in the slow cooker for some delicious pulled pork sandwiches.
Tillamook cheese 7-8 oz cheese – $1.99
Cheese is a ridiculous price right now (at all retailers). In fact, Costco just had a note about their cheese prices being higher than normal. If you pick up the 8 oz Tillamook for $1.99 then you’re paying $3.99/lb – not too shabby, especially for that fancy shredded cheese.
Fred Meyer Milk, Orange Juice or 12 dozen eggs – $0.88 each.
Great price for all of these items. I have been tossing a dozen eggs at a time into my Instant Pot for Instant Pot hardboiled eggs and my kids are noshing on those for snacks. Since they graze 24/7 a day, I’m glad they’re eating some protein and not a “snack pack” of some kind. And since I’m doing Weight Watchers (hello, quarantine pounds – I’m talking to you), hard boiled eggs are zero points. I’ll be stocking up at 88 cents a dozen.
Board games – Buy one, get one free. Seems like we’re playing Skipbo and Apples to Apples daily around here. . . some new board games might do us some good. I think BOGO is a great price point for buying a couple new games.
Yoplait Go-Gurt yogurt – $0.99
download the $1 digital coupon to get this price
This is a good price, but don’t be shy to look at the yogurt quarts in the cooler. You might find less packaging (less sugar) and a better per ounce price with the bigger tubs. Also, Costo usually has a great deal on Go-Gurts (when they go on coupon) – but my kids always seem to get tired of them when I buy them in bulk and then end up going bad. Can you relate? One more thing – my kid likes to freeze these for treats – something to consider to spice up quarantine life..
Zucchini/Squash – $0.99/lb
Delicious to grill or roast in the oven.
Ora Ida potatoes – $1.79/lb
You must buy 5 or more to get this price. Anything under $1.99 each is a good price for frozen potatoes in my book! Shredded hashbrowns make a great cheesy casserole especially when paired with some of the inexpensive Tillamook shredded cheese (see above). Maybe pair with steak and zucchini for a meal? Tator tots are life, so if you’re feeling like you need a pick-me-up, make some room in your life for tots. And/or google (and make) something called loaded tot nachos – they are not calorie free (consider pairing with steak and cheese – above).
Thomas English muffins – $1.99
You must buy 5 or more to get this price. These are great to pair with the $0.88 eggs and $1.99 cheese for breakfast sandwiches! We always get the lighter/lower calorie ones and even the kids love them.
Fred Meyer purified drinking water (24 pack) – $1.99
You must buy 5 or more to get this price. Great stock-up item. Always good to have on hand for emergencies.
Kroger Deluxe Ice Cream, 48 oz – $1.49 each
You must buy 5 or more to get this price.
Tree Top Apple Juice, 64 fl oz – $0.99
You must buy 5 or more to get this price. I’m going to be personally buying at least 5 of these – not because we drink apple juice at all January through September, but because we like to do hot apple cider for the holidays and this is usually the lowest price apple juice goes, this is my time to stock up. It might drop again before Thanksgiving – but it will certainly stay good in the pantry until then if I buy it now.
Kroger salad dressing – $0.99 each
Barilla pasta – $1 each
This is one of those things I’ve been picking up if it’s $1 or less. It’s a great stockpile item.
Simple Truth Organic Broth – $1.67 each
Great staple for cooking and baking – especially through the holidays. I generally look for this under $1.89 a carton.
One more thing – did you see Fred Meyer now has a price match guarantee? This is a BIG deal! I’ve always wanted to be able to price match Amazon when my kids decide they need a toy at Fred Meyer. . . and now it can happen! Take advantage of this when Amazon has their rock bottom prices the couple weeks before Black Friday to save on those popular items! They will price match for 30 days after the fact (crazy!). Read the details here so you can really take the best advantage of this new policy.
SAFEWAY
Sweet corn – 3 for $1
Signature Farms® Chicken Picnic Pack, Drumsticks, Thighs or Leg Quarters – $1.29/lb
These are great ROASTED on a sheet pan. Add some garlic powder, salt/pepper. Roast up a package and use on salads or in soup for the week.
Yoplait yogurt 4-6 oz – $0.29/cents each with in-ad coupon or download the e-coupon here.
Sandwich SELECT Sandwich Bread – $0.99/cents each with in-ad coupon or download the e-coupon here.
Rice-a-Roni or Pasta Roni – $0.88 cents each with in-ad coupon or download the e-coupon here.
FRIDAY FRENZY – Primo Taglio pan-roasted turkey breast – $5/lb
Friday, August 21 only
Signature SELECT Baking chips – 3 for $5
Anything under $1.99 for chocolate chips isn’t a terrible deal.
Nabisco Snack Crackers (Wheat Thins, Triscuits) – 3 for $5
These are a great item to stock-up on now if you plan to serve cheese platters during the holiday. We love Wheat Thins for salmon dip and cheese slices at holiday get togethers! Anything under $1.75/box is worth paying attention to this time of year.
Crest toothpaste 4.3 oz – $0.99 cents
COSTCO
See Costco currently offers on website
Premier Protein shakes – $7 off
I’m not sure what the bottom-line is on these, but I plan to go this weekend and find out. Great option for Weight Watchers (2 pts depending on plan) or cut calories. What are your favorite protein shakes?
Kirkland Signature Organic and Recyclable K-Cup Pods 120 ct – $31.99
This comes out to $0.27 cents each. Anything under 30 cents each is worth paying attention to.
Skinny Pop Popcorn – $4 off
My kids love these and I like that it’s an easy 3 pt snack on Weight Watchers. It’s probably a better deal when they have the big bags of Skinny Pop on sale, but they didn’t last time I checked. Plus – you don’t have the built-in portion control. With these, you’re basically paying extra to have them pre-packed and for someone to say – that’s a good place to stop, friend. 🙂
Meiji Hello Panda Chocolate Creme Filled Cookies – $2.50
Not healthy. Not really a wise financial choice. But seriously, my kids do love these, so let’s be honest, they’ll be in my cart.
Nature Valley Oats ‘N Honey Granola Bars 49 ct – $3.80 off
These will NEVER BE CHEAP ENOUGH to justify the crumbs. Only buy these if you like to have granola bars self-destruct the minute you touch them. Try to delicately nibble – you will be a HOT MESS OF DEBRIS. Good luck. You have been warned.
Folgers Classic Roast Ground Coffee 51 oz – $2 off It tastes like dirt. .. but one of my biggest fears is running out of coffee during COVID. Could there be anything worse than being self-quarantined with kids who haven’t socialized in 6-months? Yes. . .you could be doing it WITHOUT coffee. I’ll be picking up a backup to my backup.
CJ Bibgo Chicken & Vegatable Steamed Dumplings 36 ct – Mr. Queen Bee gives these 5-star reviews. I haven’t tried them. But he says they are better than the Mr. Ling gyozas that go on sale often at Costco. What do you think about these?
Hillshire Farm Lunch Meat Variety Pack 3/1 lb – $4 off. When these suckers on on sale, we stock up because they make sandwiches – which is an easy lunch option when we are ALL HOME, EVERY DAY.
