Back in late January I wrote a post about “losing” my brand new iPhone 5 and how I was able to recover it thanks to a free app called Find My iPhone. I shared the story because I think a big part of being frugal is protecting the things you invest in, so you don’t have to spend more money later to replace or fix them.
Reader Stacy read that post back in January and she added the app to her iPhone. Fast forward to this past weekend – and her phone was pick-pocketed at Pikes Place Market. Although she wasn’t able to recover her phone, she was able to use the app to recover her lost photos and data!
Here’s what she said in her email to me:
Just wanted to thank you for your blog entry about how you were able to locate your lost iphone with Find My iPhone while traveling. This weekend my phone was pick-pocketed at Pikes Place Market. Sad, but true. I was out there on business, traveling from Spokane and I’m sure I looked like a TOTAL tourist. At any rate, after reading that entry of yours some time ago, I activated the ‘lost my phone’ option and backed up my phone in the iCloud. Even though I will never see my phone again, thanks to those efforts – prompted by YOUR BLOG – I was able to get all my photos and data back. Thanks for all you do and the energy you put into your blog!

If you have an iPhone, I recommend checking out the post – How a FREE app saved me $649 this weekend (and why I think you should download it!). I hope you don’t ever have to use it, but it could be good “insurance” in case something ever does happen to your phone.
Stacy – so sorry you lost your phone, but I’m so glad that you were able to recover your data! And come back to Seattle – hopefully you’ll have a better trip next time!
Have you ever used the the Find My iPhone app?

This is horrible to admit to, but I use the APP to track my teenager when he is out and about 🙂

The app is awesome when your phone or iPad is lost or stolen, but it is also fantastic for locating a misplaced iPhone that is under a stack of papers, between the sofa cushions or under a car seat! I probably use it once a week to find my iPad that one of the kids is hiding in their bedroom or to locate one of their iPods.
