Holy hot dogs. Have I mentioned lately how much I hate clothes shopping? I pretty much avoid the mall. I prefer to do most of my shopping once or twice a year – and guess what?! Today at JcPenny I did just that! I bought 55 items and spent $119. . . regular retail price for everything would have been $1,623.51!!!
This is part of JcPenney’s new pricing system – the first and the third Friday of each month they mark down everything to it’s BEST price. With prices starting at $2 for most items. I was shocked at the selection I found when I got there at 10 a.m. when it opened. Shelves and racks full of $2 items. I had to hold myself back – and even then ended up buying nine (9) snowsuits and jackets for the fall coat drives – at $2 you can’t pass it up – and I love having them to donate for only a fraction of the price!
I also bought baby shower gifts – but mostly clothes for my kids in the next two sizes up – for next fall and winter. Some clothes will fit now, but because it was mostly long sleeves, hoodies and sweaters on sale I bought the next size up. They are set for this fall – and I even bought a nice Christmas shirt for my son. This is how you save money folks – buy a season ahead and buy when it’s at it’s rock bottom price. $2 – I think that’s it. You can’t even get these prices at Goodwill! The only better option would be garage sales and that’s hit or miss.
The most I spent on any item was $5 – for the polos for my husband. Which seems expensive compared to the other bargains I snagged. He’ll appreciate a few new shirts.
I think I’m going to have to make the first Friday of the month – a Penney’s day. Although now that I’m stocked up for the next year, I’m not sure what else we need. They no longer do coupons or doorbuster sales – they just mark down clothing on the first and third Friday’s of the month – and when it’s gone, it’s gone. It definitely got busier as the morning went on – it was all Black Friday-ish with people saying “Can you believe this is only $2?”
If you follow me on Facebook – you got “in the field” reports this morning as I was at the store. Follow me on Facebook – so you get noticed first on these types of deals!
Did you get any deals at JCP today?

Heather, Which Penny’s did you go to? Can you confirm what days of the month the sales are? I think it’s the first and third Fridays?

I went to Penneys in MO a couple weekends ago on a Sunday and I got 4 shirts that were $2 each and got a pair of pants that were normally $60 for $13. So I spent about $24 for about $180 worth of clothes. My husband went on Friday and got 3 really nice shirts that would have been about $150 for $23 so not bad. I will have to make sure he goes on the next Friday when they are focusing on the mens dept. He wants to find some pants. I dont think this new pricing is too bad at all

I heard from a JCPenney worker that they highlight different departments of the store for each sale. This last Friday was kids and previously to that around me (Southern Michigan) it was ladies. The sales associate thought that next time would be the guys’ department. There will still be some sales in the other departments but they mainly focus on one with each Friday sale.
Heather says
Jaimie – I was wondering because it seemed like so many of the good deals were in one section! Wahoo. So glad to hear, my hubs needs new clothes.

I’m going to go the Bellevue Penney’s and see what’s still there tomorrow. And I have to second the idea of shopping for seasons ahead. I’ve done this since my son was a baby. I’m going to buy fall and winter stuff now in my son’s next size up, and it’s on clearance-whoo hoo!
Thanks for all the great tips and saving us all so much money!!! :0)

After reading your post, my adult daughter and I went to Penneys and we found five women’s hats and a darling ribbon hair bow all for $1 each, regular retail cost would have been a total of $139 dollars! Then I found two men’s Van Heusen dress shirts regularly $50 each, for $10 and 15 dollars. We found two Relic brand cute purses regularly $38 for $3 each and a Liz Clayborn mini-clutch purse regularly $20 for $3 dollars! All total, I paid including tax $43.48 cents INSTEAD of $364.15(including tax)!!! I think I’ll be shopping Penneys again—at least when they’re having their Friday sales! It’s an 88% savings! Woohoo!

At the South Hill Mall many of the items were priced higher. The coats were $8-$15 and the shirts were $4-$7. I did find some pj’s for $2 and fleece zip ups for $2 though.
Heather says
Bummer! Thank you for the report though. Love the fleece zip ups and PJs for only $2.

I think this is going to have to be a, “Go early,” event! I went this afternoon and only found two things.
The coats I saw were still quite a bit higher than that, and a lot of areas were just cleared out.
I hope the deals keep being this great every 1st and 3rd Friday. Definitely worth planning ahead for!!
I Love that you bought for coat drives, too. What a great idea!

That’s great! I’m going to have to start shopping up sizes for the kids. I bought that green jacket for my son at Thanksgiving and paid $25. Now I have no excuse to do that ever again 😉
Jens says
Wow…great prices for kids clothes—what about bras and towels–other areas throughout the store? I haven’t been to Penney’s since Christmas…looks like its time to check it out again!
Heather says
I didn’t make it to the other areas of the store, unfortunately. Ran out of time, had to pick son up from school. I’d love to hear reports from others if they went!

Way to go!! This makes me actually want kids 😉
