Today my son turns four. The cliche of “it goes so fast” is starting to set in and I realize just how quickly he has grown into a young boy! His birthday party is later this week, but with today being his actual birthday we wanted to make it special for him. I made him his favorite breakfast – a pancake with fresh blueberries. Nothing crazy and over the top – but he loved it.
Growing up birthdays were never really a big deal in my house, but I remember wishing that they were, so I would love to start some fun traditions with my kids to show them it’s their special day! Ā I want to hear from you – do you have special traditions or things that you do to honor your kid’s birthdays? I’d love to put together a list of frugal, fun ideas!
Gone so fast . . . just like these last four years!

When my daughter who is now married was younger we let her pick her dinner menu with a special treat that was a surprise for after. We always made the day about her. Went to her favorite park, read her favorite book and stuff like that. Looked at pictures from the younger years and talked about her changes she loved it.
Happy Birthday !!!!!!

My little kid days are gone… kids are 21, 19, 16, 14…but when they were little I would let them have birthday cake for breakfast. It seemed that birthday cake was not much different from chocolate muffins, so why not? It made everyone incredibly happy and I could say “yes” in those toddler days when it seemed I said “no” too much. Now with big kids, I let them chose the menu and if they have a party or not. It varies year to year and is wonderful just to celebrate with them.
Enjoy these days, they really do pass quickly.

My son is now 16, but he still gets to decide what we’ll eat for his birthday! And he always wants me to bake a Chocolate Beet Cake.

Congrats to you! My son turns five (going on 42) in a week! Like Debbie mentioned about her kids, he’s allowed to pick his birthday meal and dessert (I started this when he was 3). He loves food, so this is great fun for him and he enjoys talking about what he’s had from year to year (dessert was brownies for 2 years running, but this year he wants to try ice cream cake!).
Since we alternate between visiting my Mom and her visiting us, we don’t have a special place we go on his b-day, but he’s just happy to share a meal of his design with people he loves š
This year’s menu? Radiatore pasta with marinara sauce, fresh tomatoes, grapes, and Trader Joe’s fresh garlic bread sticks. And for an extra b-day treat, I’m going to let him have chocolate milk for breakfast š

I allow my boys to pick whatever they want as dinner menu. We’ve had some very interesting meals…popcorn, green ketchup. I do encourage them to at least pick a protein so we can have a bit of nutrition in our meal. They always look forward to it and have great memories they talk about each year.

Happy birthday to your son! Today my daughter, kiddo #3, turns 5. We don’t really do anything other than the typical cake, ice cream, chips. Honestly just making it thru the day w/4 kids is reason enough to celebrate! LOL
I look forward to seeing everyone’s suggestions!
