I stopped into my local QFC store (Lacey, WA) to place a special order of the FREE Aquafresh toothpaste. While I was there I found a few other deals worth picking up. I spent $14.38 and didn’t use any coupons.
I found Organic Valley orange juice marked down to $2.50 (reg. $5.99!) and oh my goodness, it’s the best orange juice – and after the manager markdown it was cheaper than the brand name, regular ole orange juice. I also splurged on a 1/2 gallon of chocolate milk on manager markdown fro $1.39. I think this is only the second time, ever, that I’ve purchased chocolate milk for my kids – and let’s just say it’s nearly 1/2 gone after lunch. We also picked up some grapes for $1.29/lb.
I said howdy to the Meat department manager and he said, “The deal of the day are these!” Pointing to quartered chickens for $0.59 cents a pound! Apparently they have a surplus at the warehouse so they are marking it down to sell quickly! I picked up two packages for $2.88 and $3.59 – so nearly 11 pounds of meat for $6.47. This is while supplies last and the manager thought it would mostly likely be gone by tomorrow (little does he know I’m telling the world). *Please remember – the chicken at $0.59/lb was only confirmed at the Lacey, Washington store and it’s ONLY while supplies last. It’s not an advertised price from their ad, it’s only do to a surplus in the store.
My advice to you is make friends with the department managers and cashiers! Don’t be afraid to say hi, ask them how the day is going and ask them “what are the best deals in the store today?” or “Do you have any super deals on meat I should know about?” That’s how I found out about my $0.11 cent bananas last week because I was chatting it up with the cashiers.
I need your help – how would you prepare quartered chicken? I’ve never bought it in this cut style before. I’m thinking we might grill them but I’d love to hear your ideas.
Don’t forget to play the Kroger instant win game – I had a $1 in ecoupons come off from that.

Thanks again for this post. I finally made it over there at 5:30 pm, was worried but there was still at least a dozen out on sale. I grabbed 3, some chocolate milk and treated myself to some manager special marionberry yogurt. I plan on grilling all this chicken.

Julie – I’m so glad you were able to pick some up! It seemed like a really great deal. I hope to grill mine, too. Barefoot Contessa looks like she has a good bbq recipe for a quartered chicken. We’ll see!

You can marinate them, brown them then cook them in liquid like coq au van, heres the Pioneer Woman’s recipe; http://thepioneerwoman.com/cooking/2009/08/coq-au-vin/
Maybe not the best idea for the heat today but great for the end of the week when the rain comes back!

I have a really simple recipe for crispy baked chicken. Sprinkle the chicken pieces with salt to taste. Place them skin side up in a baking pan in a 350 degree oven. After 20 minutes use a turkey baster to suck up the excess liquid that forms. Return to the over for another 20 minutes or so until cooked through. You can vary this with other seasonings, but my family likes it best just like this. Because you remove the excess moisture, the skin gets nice and crisp!
