Rise and Shine is my way of sitting down and having a cup of coffee with you! We talk about the new deals of the day, highlights from yesterday, and anything else that might help us save time, money or energy. I share with you what’s happening with me – and I LOVE to hear about what’s happening with you.
Unless it’s the lets-help-you-save-money species of bees.
This special species helps you avoid the sting of full price and are good to have around.
Good morning! Yesterday we packed up the car, picked up grandma and grandpa in Tacoma and headed up the Olympia Peninsula to the Sequim Lavender Festival. It was a glorious day filled with lavender farms, craft and fair booths, delicious food, live music and more. They have a lot of free features, we only spent money on lunch at the festival (falafal $7, hot dogs $2.50) and our biggest expense was the tank of gas to get there. But the views and smells were well worth it. TODAY is the last day of the annual festival and if you’re up for it, I would definitely recommend checking it out. It starts at 10 a.m.
Yesterday I shared a garden and chicken update. I need to know – are these onions ready to harvest? When do you know? I’m ready to pick these Sweet Walla Walla onions. Also, some of you are saying I have Poison Hemlock in my garden – I took more photos of that yesterday and I will post soon. They look and smell like carrots, but they are just white and spindly. They do not have white flowers (which is what I found when Googling Poison Hemlock).
If you have a small business, share about it on this Promote Your Business post. It’s my way of providing you a forum for sharing your business and a way for us to support each other, if someone is looking for a consultant or homemade craft (love the Etsy shops!)
If you tried to access the site yesterday afternoon and evening – sorry. The site crashed and was taking an extra long time to load. It’s not supposed to do that, especially when I’m away from my computer having fun with my family. So it took a little longer to get back up. And they (the server peeps) are looking into why it might have crashed.
Later today we should have the very best school supply deals for this week.

Margaret says
Your onions are not ready to harvest yet, but you should stop watering them now. When they’re ready to harvest, the tops will fall over and dry out. When all the tops have fallen over and dried, then you harvest them and put them on a drying rack in a shady place for a few weeks to cure them. (I use some old screens on cinderblocks on my covered patio as drying racks.)
There are two reasons you want to stop watering them about a month before you harvest them. First, the nutrients in the leaves get sucked down into the bulb when you stop watering them. Second, you want them to be as dry as possible before you harvest them so they cure more quickly. Some people leave them out in the field for a couple of days after pulling them up, before transferring to the drying racks, but you can only do that if your garden gets some shade because you don’t want to burn the bulbs. You want to make sure the onions are thoroughly dried out (cured) before storing them, so they’ll keep longer. If there’s too much moisture in them, they’ll rot.
