Good morning! You awake? In case you missed my note last night, Rise and Shine is a new morning post that I’ll be doing. It’s my way of having coffee with you and sharing a lot of information in one post (instead of many small posts or not at all). Let’s rise, shine, and save together. 🙂
Can you believe it’s already September 23? We have been back to school for two weeks now and starting to setting into a routine. So far this year I’ve been forcing myself to get a few things done BEFORE I go to bed – like putting out breakfast supplies the night before (placemats, bowls, spoons, cup), setting out clothes for the kids, and getting the coffee pot ready. It doesn’t save a whole lot of time – but it simplifies my mornings, which helps the day start easier in the mad dash to get out the door on time. Do you have tips for making your busy morning routines easier?
COUPONS
You should find ONE Smart Source coupon insert in your paper today. Don’t be too sad, next weekend 9/30, we will have FOUR inserts – Smart Source, Red Plum, P&G and a Moments to Save (Pepsi Co.). Don’t pass over the Parade – it has $7 in Covergirl coupons! On days with no Red Plum insert – I recommend picking up the Seattle Times (if you’re in the NW), it usually has a more robust Smart Source and since they don’t carry the Red Plum, you aren’t missing out on any other coupons.
The Jo-Ann Fabrics ad in today’s paper (9/23) has a coupon for 50% off any regular-priced item and one for 50% off any one regular-priced fabric! Remember Michael’s accepts competitors coupons and vice versa. And look on the back of the ad for Daily Doorbusters – great prices each day on specific items. Oh and Jo-Anns has a great iPhone app – check it out, you can access your coupons on your phone!
The 15% off Famous Footwear coupon is still available to print. You can also use it online.
Here’s a tip for printing coupons from Coupons.com – Are you’re tired of scrolling down every page, did you know you can just click your SPACE bar and the page scrolls down and you can click “more coupons” then? It seems to save time, try it out and let me know what you think.

RECIPES & MEAL PLANNING
Yesterday my husband made an amazing Chicken and Dumpling soup in the crockpot. Sent in by reader Kendra it will go in my Crock-tober series and I know you’re going to love it. The series starts October 1 and will be a full month of slow cooker recipes. Send in your recipe and you get a $10 Amazon gift card if I feature your recipe on the blog!
Dinner tonight is going to be some kind of pork roast in the crock pot. QFC has pork shoulder roast for $1.49/lb so I was able to get a large roast for about $6. It’s so big I think it could easily make a few meals. I need to figure out what kind of recipe we’ll do – but it should be good and I think that’s a great price for a pork roast. Do you have a favorite pork shoulder roast slow cooker recipe?
If you need a last minute dinner idea Fred Meyer has whole roasting chickens on sale for $0.88/lb (started today) – this is a great price. I recommend picking up two – if you’re roasting one, doubling it up is only a tiny bit of extra work and you can stretch it into many meals. Read my post about roasting two chickens at once here. p.s. FM also has a great deal on Tillamook cheese!
Speaking of meals, expect a meal planning post later today with some suggestions for meals you can make this week based on current deals! After taking the summer off, I’m hoping to offer meal planning suggestions every week.
FOR THE LOCAL NW FOLKS
Today is the last day of the Puyallup Fair! We chose not to go as a family this year. With a 5- and 2-year old the activities are limited and we had such a busy summer we opted to pass on it this year. I did go last Thursday and met some wonderful Queen Bee fans! Did you hear the Puyallup Fair is thinking about changing it’s name the state fair!?! Did you go this year? What was your favorite thing to do?

Olympia friends – Did you hear there is a TJ Maxx opening in Capital Mall Promenade (in old Borders building)? It opens next Sunday, September 30 at 8 a.m.! I always seem to find great deals at Ross Dress for Less, how do you think TJ Maxx compares?

Thanks for creating this. I really enjoyed reading it. For those of us who need to know the scoop at fast speeds this is the way to go. I got all my info fresh in the AM plus I learned that little spacebar trick. I had no idea. See. You do learn something new all of the time. Thanks for all your hard work.
