Rise and Shine is my way of sitting down and having a cup of coffee with you! We talk about the new deals of the day, highlights from yesterday, and anything else that might help us save time, money or energy. I share with you what’s happening with me – and I LOVE to hear about what’s happening with you.
Good morning! How is your week going? I know I have a lot of military readers and I’m wondering how you’re doing with the government shutdown. What are you hearing? I’ve seen reports of perishables (meat, dairy, produce) marked down considerably at the commissary – did they get cleaned out yesterday? I heard reports of nearly 800,000 federal employees who are facing the possibility of no paycheck – I’m really hoping this is resolved quickly and that’s not the case. What are you hearing on your end? And how is this shutdown impacting your family?
Yesterday I picked my son up from school and surprised him with a trip to the movies. We saw Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. It was okay. I definitely liked the play on words for the animals that are in the movie – fla-mangoes, taco-dile supreme, shrimp-anzees and others. That part was right up my alley. It was fun to have a little date with my boy in the middle of the week. I bought our tickets on Fandango ahead of time and got a FREE download of the original Cloudy with Chance of Meatballs movie (they email you a link to download within 48 hours of purchase). I probably would have gotten the tickets anyway, but this was an extra perk! And don’t ask me how much I paid for popcorn (my son’s favorite). . . .
Then we went to Grocery Outlet and I scoped out the deals, which I hope to report on later today. My son had fun looking at all the spooky Halloween decorations and we picked up two pumpkins ($4.99 each, they are big and NICE!). Plus we found some great food prices. Expect a write-up and giveaway either today or tomorrow. They have a new ad that you can look at here, it starts today. I think the 3-pack of Red Baron pizzas for $7.99 is a good price, BOGO Welch’s and Jennie O Turkey for $2.99!
Yesterday I shared Costco Halloween Candy prices. Looks like the price to beat for snack size candy bars is less than 10 cents each. If you see it cheaper than that in the stores, with sale and coupon, it will beat Costco’s price. But of course there are lot of other varieties and types for sale, so check out the full list of Costco Halloween deals here.
The Red Tricycle is at it again with another great giveaway. This time enter to win a year’s worth of diapers – that’s right 2,5000 diapers. This post is sponsored by Red Tricycle.
Later today we should have Safeway deals, the best Halloween candy prices round-up, possibly a crock pot recipe (can I get my act together in time?), Grocery Outlet giveaway, and more great deals, so stay tuned!

I got a great deal on chicken breast yesterday, and made a big bunch of chicken nuggets. Just cut the chicken in to chunks or strips, roll in flour or bread crumbs (I used about 2 cups of bread crumbs and 1/4 cup or so of the garlic bread seasoning from Costco) dredge in beaten eggs, then back in the crumbs. Bake on a rack over a cookie sheet for 15 minutes or so (to 170*) at 375*. Turning over halfway through makes both sides crispy. Serve immediately or cool and freeze for a quick lunch or dinner! Much healthier and yummier than a drive-through.
And I think you definitely need that costume for events like the fair and classes!

Thanks for the recipe. New mom here and I am trying to figure out what to feed our 11 month old that my husband and I would like to eat, too.
